Celebrate National Mutt Day!
According to to Wikipedia, a mutt is a mongrel, mixed-breed dog that does not belong to one officially recognized breed and is not the result of intentional breeding. I prefer to think of us as wonderful combinations that come in a surprise package ~ you are never quite sure what you are getting but you just know it's going to be good.
M ~ majorly adorable
U ~ undeniably grateful & loyal
T ~ totally trainable
T ~ totally unique!
Add to that list that studies have shown we have fewer health issues, that our personalities have fewer character flaws and oh yea, you are saving a life and you can clearly see... Mutts Rule!
National Mutt Day encourages us to embrace, save & celebrate mixed breed dogs twice a year, on July 31st and again on Dec. 2nd.
There's a saying I really like ~ Adopt, Don't Shop, but I also totally understand those folks that prefer a pup with a particular, known history & lineage. I'd just like to ask that you support Pound Puppies too in whatever way touches your heart. Shelters are filled to the brim with mixed breed dogs that deserve a second chance. Please consider opening your heart and home to a Mutt in need the next time you add to your family.
There's a really cool organization I especially adore called Fences for Fido. They are an award-winning, non-profit organization that builds donor-funded fences, free of charge for families who keep their dogs on chains, tethers and in small enclosures. In just a few short hours, you can change a dog's life forever. You can learn more or arrange to make a contribution of your time, energy or funds at www.fencesforfido.org (They also have a page on Facebook) However you choose to celebrate this holiday, I hope your heart is fuller for it and from the tip of my tail to the tip of my nose, I thank you.

Maybe I need to be a little bit more naughty?
I'm a good girl, a really, really good girl, at least the majority of the time, but I think that just might be the problem. Here's how I discovered that being good doesn't always pay off.
Yesterday I had my yearly check-up with my favorite vet, Dr. Anthony. After giving me some great snuggles he told me how strong and muscular I've grown since our last visit. He complimented me on my shining coat and my clean ears and teeth. My tail was waggin' wildly from all the praise he was piling on me and then it all suddenly came to a horrendous halt. Dr. Anthony said said I might need to take off a little weight. Excuse me? I thought from what you were just saying, that I was downright perfect and now you're telling me I'm fat? Ok, ok, you didn't say fat exactly but you did suggest I drop a pound to a pound and a half of weight. After discussing my one little imperfection with Mom, he said that it wasn't an exercise problem so it must be a food issue. And after a few more questions it was determined that I was obviously getting too many treats. How can that possibly be? I can't even imagine a world where there are too many treats, can you?
Starting today my life has changed completely... my breakfast bowl was a little less full than usual, a fact I noticed right off. Then I saw Mom was cutting all my treats in half! How on earth am I supposed to live under these conditions? I'm being slowly, systematically starved to death I tell you. I can only conclude that if I'd been naughty a little more often, not only would I have had some great stories to tell but I also wouldn't be learning the hard cold facts of being put on a diet. Life isn't always fair and now I can attest to that.
I hope to be able to survive this great tragedy and learn to once again find joy in my life. In the meantime, feel free to send cookies, if you can sneak them past the food Nazi, aka Mom.

PS ~ Mom says I'm being overly "dramatic" ~ is that just another word for fat?

Fifteen Facts About Me
Since I'd love to know more about you, I thought just maybe you'd like to know more about me. So here we go!
1.) My birth mom was a Black Lab~Dachshund combination and my dad was a (very confident) Chihuahua. That makes me a Labachiweinie. Yup, I'm adopted.
2.) My favorite treats are dried sweet potato strips and I'm so thankful when I can smell a new batch drying in the oven.
3.) My biological mom wasn't able to care for us pups so all twelve of us became foster kids at two days old. My mom is considered a Foster Failure because she ended up keeping me. That was my plan from the moment I met her.
4.) I have two female feline siblings and one male. Their names are Ozzie, Lily and Ruby. Secretly I really like them but I work constantly at keeping them on their toes, worried that I might get 'em at any moment.
5.) I don't like the feel of a tennis ball in my mouth but the Chuck-it Glow in the Dark ball feels great and is the coolest thing ever. Have you ever played fetch in the dark?
6.) Goats milk is delicious but kinda hard to get on a steady basis. I suggested we just add a goat to the family but so far I've seen no sign of that happening.
7.) I have great dogie neighbors ~ Buddy, Zeus & Louie. They are great fun to hang out back with and just shoot the breeze. Sometimes we complain about our kibble, sometimes about house rules and occasionally about how incredibly lucky we are.
8.) My Grandma Doris isn't a big fan of dogs but she loves me and even lets me play fetch inside her house. Thankfully I haven't broken anything yet, the rules might change if I do.
9.) I love to chase seagulls at the beach and ride in the kayak at the lake with Mom. I like water in all kinds of forms, even the sprinklers at the track make me happy.
10.) I have one tattoo...and not planning for any more, at least at this moment.
11.) I can tear out the heart (or squeaker) of a stuffed toy in just a little less than five minutes, at least that's my current average. I'm working on getting quicker at it.
12.) I like it best when Alexa plays Cocoa Montoya or Stevie Ray Vaughan during the day while Mom's at work.
13.) My bedtime is 7 pm and wake up is when Ozzy starts howling at 4 am every... darn... morning.
14.) I just recently discovered that I can swim, its magical!
15.) I have my very own blog and all the cool kids read it. Thanks so much for being a cool kid.

Dog Paddling
I've discovered the joy in spending a hot summer day on (or in) the water, and I like it ~ a lot!
Yesterday I got to go to Horseshoe Lake with my mom & her friend, my Auntie M. First I got loaded into my car seat and caught a glimpse of the pretty green boat in the back of the truck. I couldn't begin to imagine what we could possibly be planning to do with that.
We drove awhile and then we landed, at a lake full of calm water where the sun was already sending sparkles across the ripples. I wasn't exactly thrilled with having my safety vest put on but Mom said it was non-negotiable so I just gritted my teeth while she tightened all the straps, knowing fully well that even though it had lovely blue & white polka dots all over it, it made me look fat.
Mom plopped herself into the boat and I found my sweet spot and then off we went! Up and down the lake we glided, with the sun and the breeze upon our faces, carrying the most wonderful of smells along with it. A couple of times Mom put me in the water so that I could swim next to the boat but it was all on purpose, no accidental tip-overs for us. It was so interesting to see things just float past us, houses, kids, toys and occasional sticks. I was taking it all in, I didn't want to miss a thing! Sometimes we'd hear a swimmer holler a hello aimed at us and lots of folks seemed to think that it was cool that our kayak had a dog riding in it. I thought it all seemed just about perfect. I'd never been swimming before and certainly never been in a boat but I had easily earned my kayak certificate by the time we headed home. It was a scorcher of a day so we rested on the shore for a bit, ate some yummies and drank tons of cool, clear water and then... we got to do it all over again!!!! The second time out I relaxed a bit more and really embraced my new adventure addiction. I was so thrilled that Auntie M was willing to share her yak with us but even more thrilled to hear that we were just days away from getting our very own!!! I love Amazon almost as much as my mom does. I was tuckered out from all the firsts I experienced yesterday but I slept so contently, my dreams filled with memories of my first day on the water and I can hardly wait to hit the "repeat" button and do it all over again.

Space aliens have landed
I now have hard core evidence, pictures in fact, that prove beyond a reasonable doubt... aliens landed on the trail! Yes, I know all about crop circles, flying spaceships and extraterrestrials. Most days Mom leaves the music playing for me when she goes to work ~ I prefer Coco Montoya or Stevie Ray Vaughan, but once in a while she leaves the tv on for me to watch. I especially enjoy Ancient Aliens and always pay close attention to what they have to say so I certainly know space craft tracks when I see one.
It looks like there might have been as many as three flying saucers that landed and I detected a different smell near the spot where their circles remained. I hope they return again, preferably during one of our walks, so that I can prove to Mom that I'm right... and she's wrong. There will always be naysayers in the world I guess.
It's going to be a hot one here today so be sure your water dish is full and you make time for multiple naps between playing fetch and chasing your feline siblings.

Just checking in
Hoping you all had a wonderfully fantabulus 4th of July! My mom had an adventure of her own, non-dog friendly, so I got to go to Puppy Camp and hang with my canine buddies. I've ran and played catch and had such a great time. Here's a photo of nap time with a few of my favorite pups. Enjoy your day and make it one filled with memories.
