The Chronicles of Stella~ Early morning adventures

What a fantabulous start to our day.  What time to you go to bed at night and what time do you wake up?  I put myself to bed at 7 pm nearly every night.  I'm not sure why I chose that time but by then, my little bed is sounding mighty fine to me.  My mom is an early, early, ridiculously early riser so by 6:30 am, we've already been up for hours.  The cats and I have had our breakfast and Mom has polished off her pot of coffee so we are ready to bundle up and head out for our walk.

Hello sunshine

Good bye Mr Moon

Today was pretty much amazing!  We had the harvest full moon setting on one side of us and the sun rising on the other.  We got the privilege of being the very first footprints in the sand and saw a huge ghost ship pass by.  I'll admit, it scared me with its fog horn!  Mom saw something bobbing in the water and it turned out to be a sea lion or a seal, I don't really know the difference.  He was having a great time playing in the fog topped water but as Mom was getting her phone ready to snap a photo, the seal saw me, popped up a bit higher in the water and then just disappeared.  I'd love to try diving down deep too but the flotation device I'm forced to wear when we are in the water makes that a near impossibility.  Maybe when I'm older I'll get a chance.

Ghost ships are kinda scary

I know there are folks who like to sleep later, some much, much later, but I'm here to tell you, they miss out on some wonderful starts to the day.  Isn't it amazing that after all of the sunrises I've ever seen, I still have never seen one repeated.  Each and every one is as unique as you and me are.  How cool is that?

Mona and Me

My friend Mona took me on a new adventure yesterday.  Turns out that there is a beach just a couple of miles from my house... that my mom has never ever taken me to before.  It's called Willow Grove and my friend Mona knows all about it!
This is my friend Mona Stein!
Mona's mom and my mom are friends so when we were invited to share a walk with them, we jumped (me literally) at the chance.  What a great discovery.  It only took us a few minutes to get there and it was a treasure trove of new smells, one of my favorite things to do.

Hello Mr/Mrs Sun
It was still a wee bit dark when we arrived at the waters edge but the sun was trying it best to wake up.  Pretty soon we watched it stretch and shine into the morning sky.  Pure bliss I tell you.  Good friends, water lapping the shore and a ton of new things that needed checking out.  We saw flowers along the shoreline, perhaps a bouquet sent sea bound in memory of a loved one.  We saw at least a kazillion little shells all over the sand, and a fish that had washed ashore and was no longer among the living.

Flowers on the sand

A big bird was perched on a piling and he kept a close eye on everything we did and especially on that fish.  We even saw a gigantic ship, up close!  Oh sure, I'd seen ships before but they were always far, far away.  This ship was close enough I could have swam to it, if only Mom would have let me.  I really don't like that little word that starts with an "n" and ends with an "o".

Were we being spied on?

I'd sure like a ride on this big boy

After looking to our right and looking to our left, we happily determined that no one else was around and so we decided to be wild women and break the rules.  Off came the leashes and Mona and I were free!!!  It felt so good to run and explore.  We chased each other and even got our toes wet in the water.  Man, it was cold.  We dug a little, we peed a little and we sniffed a lot.  That's a great way to start the day.

Girls just wanna have fun
It was a wonderful  morning and I can hardly wait to go again.  Thanks Mona, for sharing this special spot with us and enjoying it with you was the bestest ever.

Puff the Magic Dragon lives under our house

This morning we awoke to a world full of stuffing ~ at least that's what I call it.  It sure reminds me of what our house looks like after I've successfully gutted a toy or two.  Mom says the correct term is fog but I say, to each their own.  By the time our walk was complete almost all of the stuffing was gone, thanks I'm sure to some Mom, somewhere.  Check the trash can, that's where mine always ends up.

It was only 43 degrees out when we hit the trail. I was so enjoying summer but I know fall can be nice too, it's just the transition that is difficult.  If Mom had put my jacket on yesterday, I'd have been all hot and bothered but today it felt great.  Mom put on her heavy coat and off we went.  We saw our first wolly bear caterpillar of the year today.  I asked if he was related to the one we befriended last year but he said no, just from the same tribe.  His markings were so evenly spaced, it was hard to predict how long of a winter we'll be having.  I guess we will have to just wait and see.

Just as we were walking past the golf course I spotted a coyote having a grand time down on the greens.  There wasn't a golfer in sight and I wanted so badly to run down and frolic with her for a bit but once again, Mom said no.  I find it interesting that she always finds time to stop and chat when we run into one of her friends...  I was hoping she'd at least snap a photo of the pretty girl but by the time she had pulled off her gloves and readied her camera, that little coyote was hiding in the bushes, just laughing at us.  Much like this mornings caterpillar, that coyote and I must certainly be from the same tribe.

By the time we got home, we were both a bit chilly so can you guess who came to our rescue?  It was our old friend, Puff!  I hadn't heard from him for a while so I can only guess that he'd been away on vacation.  Puff is a magical dragon that lives under our house.  He is very well behaved  and is always ready, willing and able to blow his hot breath up into every room of our home when things start to get cold.  It feels so good and the cats love to sit right by the floor grates to better take it all in.  Me, I'm happy to just curl up on my favorite fuzzy blankly and let it engulf me.  Puff is a very, very good boy and a valuable member of our family.

I'm a happy and content little black pup, happy to just sit and bide my time,  humming the words to Puff the Magic Dragon, quietly though because to be honest, I can't carry a tune, unlike Ozzy, my feline brother.  Ozzy had a tremendous voice and no one can sing the Blues better than he can, so the rest of us don't even try.  Life is good, and I hope yours is too.  Here's to Fall in all her glory!

The Chronicles of Stella ~ My First Trip to the Barn

Lions and tigers and bears... oh my!  Ok, I might be exaggerating just a teeny, tiny bit. I've never met a lion or tiger or even a bear but I am now on a first name basis with some horses and chickens.

I think we can all agree by now that I am an adventure loving little black pup, so when my Auntie M invited us to go visit the barn, we didn't hesitate for even a moment. Sure, I'd seen horses on tv but I'd never seen one live and up close.  Holy cow, they are beautiful and h-u-g-e and listen to this... they let people ride on their backs!  Isn't that just the nicest thing for them to do?  I was scared at initial introductions but Cody was a really cool guy, very friendly and handsome too.  There's a resident pug named Sugar and a lot of the horse owners bring their pooches so Cody is used to seeing dogs running around and tries her best to make everyone feel at home. I tried to be on my best behavior.  Making new friends is one of my very favorite things to do.

Auntie M took us on a tour and I got to see where the horses sleep and eat and where they go to run around and play during the day.  It was a lovely place, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy eating hay and grains as a steady diet.  I did grab a taste from Cody's bowl though, just in the name of research.  I think I'll keep to my regular food.

Next we walked a little farther and came upon the oddest looking creature, definitely one I'd never seen before.  Turns out I was eyeball to eyeball with a chicken.  I was a bit leery of the horses because of their immensity but these chicken-things were more my size.  They were being kept in a jail which I learned is actually called a chicken coop, or at least I guess that's the more politically correct term.   I had to wonder if it was because they'd done something naughty but they seemed nice enough to me.  Kinda quiet, not real talkative but I like my quiet times too.  To each their own.  Mom explained that the eggs I love to have cracked on top of my kibble in the mornings are produced by these girls.  We even brought home a dozen of their eggs and I enjoyed one this morning.  I find that rather magical and was interested in trying to lay an egg or two myself but Mom said no.  Sometimes she's just no fun at all.

You know, if there's one thing I know from the tips of my ears to the tips of my toes, it's that you can never have too many good friends.  And... if they happen to let you ride on their back or provide you with yummy eggs, even better.

The Chronicles of Stella: Cruel and unusual punishment

Cruel and unusual punishment

What could I have possibly have done to deserve this?  It's true that I'd been warned once or twice, or maybe fifty or sixty times but really, was it so big of a deal that it demanded this kind of response?  So, I guess I sorta, kinda inhale my food.  I'm still not really clear on what the problem is with that.  I do tend to cough and hack and sound like I might be choking to death but hey, I haven't died yet.  I know, it not the healthiest way to eat and it might be harder on my tummy from swallowing some air along with my food.  I've thought about slowing down and taking more time savoring the texture and taste.  I usually think this just right after snarfing down my latest meal, but once I see my breakfast and dinner being served, my mind is focused intently on getting it from the plate to my tummy just as fast as I possibly can.  I inhale, hack a bit, feel remorse for not having slowed down and swear to myself that I'll do better next time.  Unfortunately "next time" just doesn't seem to ever happen... sigh...

Enter the "food dish from hell".  Did you even know such a creation of terror existed?  Well,  I sure didn't!  Yes, it is pretty,  a lovely shade of purple, with a nice little design in the middle,  but it's that nice little design that must have been thought up by the devil himself.  It turns out that the food finds its way into all those little swirls and you are forced to choose between starving to death or spending your last days on earth trying to get those swirls to release your food, tiny morsel by tiny morsel, one by one.  I'm learning to adjust because it doesn't seem to be going anywhere and my old dish is totally MIA but working for my kibble is not how I envisioned my life turning out.

On a much happier note, I found my twin, well... sorta.  As one of a litter of ten little black pups adopted out by our local humane society, I'm always hoping I might run into one of my siblings.  I know my only sister,  Cinder was adopted by a most wonderful mom and she is happy, healthy and well loved but I often wonder about those eight brothers of mine.  So Mom and I are out walking our regular trail and up ahead I see another little black pup headed our way.  I started getting excited and even Mom thought it just might be someone from my tribe, after all he had a little bit of white on his chest and front toes, JUST LIKE ME.

As they got near Mom asked his dad if by chance he'd been adopted by the Humane Society of Cowlitz County and sure enough, he was, but nearly two years before I was even born!  His name is Wilson and although I was a little bit disappointed that he wasn't a relative of mine, I was super happy to have found my twin in a new friend.   Wilson and I just love running into each other while out walking and I tell you, it's like gazing into a mirror. I guess I'll just keep looking because those  boys have to be out there somewhere.
